The People of New Jersey are very
proud of the long and prestigious history of our beautiful state. As one of the
original 13 colonies, New Jersey is certainly rich in history. In
particular, the region of the state called "South Jersey" is extremely rich in
both Revolutionary War and Civil War history.
New Jersey Historical Society
The New Jersey Historical Society is a state-wide, private, non
profit historical museum, library, and archives dedicated to collecting, preserving, and
interpreting the rich and intricate political, social, cultural and economic history of
New Jersey to the broadest possible audiences. Founded in 1845, we are the oldest cultural
institution in the state. Through exhibitions, publications, and programming, we examine
who and what we are, what it means to live and work in New Jersey, what contributes to New
Jersey's distinct identity, and what are the unique contributions New Jerseyans make to
the region and the country.

Society has been the beneficiary of the interest and generosity of residents of the county
and of those whose family roots are here. This has included the acquisition of all of its
buildings, the collections that make up the museum, the library facility, and most of the
cost of restorations and renovations that have taken place over the years, not to mention
the vast contributions of volunteer time put in by its members. The result has been an
historical museum that many believe to be unique and without equal in the United States
and a library that draws genealogical researchers from all areas of the country."
